Take action to help protect Ontario’s farmland
Ontario’s farmland isn’t just part of the landscape — it’s the foundation of our food system, our communities, and a $50.6 billion agri-food sector.
But with increasing development pressures, this land is at risk.
Now more than ever, we need responsible land use planning that balances development with farmland preservation.
Here’s how you can help ensure our farmland is protected for food production — today and for future generations.
Add your voice: Sign the petition
We’re thrilled to have more than 74,000 Ontarians already signed on in support of preserving farmland — and there’s still time to join them! If you missed the petition earlier, you can still add your name at:

Speak up: Connect with your elected officials
Your voice matters at every level of government. Take the time to bring your concerns and ideas to local decision-makers.
- Talk to your MPP: Call, email, or meet them at a local summer event. Share why protecting farmland matters to you — and how agriculture can be part of Ontario’s solutions for housing, growth, and jobs.
- Reach out to your municipal councillors: While some land use policies are set provincially, many key decisions are made locally. Make sure your concerns are heard close to home.
With strategies like in-fill development and higher-density housing, Ontario can grow responsibly while keeping prime farmland for agricultural uses.
Make it public: Share your perspective
Letters to the editor and comments on news stories help shape public dialogue. Highlight why preserving farmland matters and how Ontario can grow sustainably without losing our ability to grow our own food.
We can do this by:
- Promoting housing and economic development within urban boundaries
- Making better use of existing infrastructure
- Using a food production perspective in decision-making
Choose local: Support Ontario farmers and farm businesses
Every local purchase is a vote for farmland. Support Ontario farmers by shopping at your local farmers’ market, buying directly from farms, or looking for and requesting local products in grocery stores.
A strong demand for local products helps keep farmland in production — and supports vibrant rural communities that grow food, fibre, fuel, and flowers for Ontario and beyond.
Together, we can keep Ontario’s farmland growing strong.
Thank you for being part of the movement.
